Organizational Overview:
Our Platform Engineering organization comprises database experts and automation engineers who focus on enabling strategies to enhance customer and partner experience and optimize business performance through database platform development and management using cutting-edge automation technologies such as Terraform, Jenkins, and Ansible.

Role Summary/Purpose:
The Cloud Database Automation Engineer role will be responsible for projects to design, enhance, or add new functionality to Synchrony Data platforms (Databases), as well as manage all operational support activities. You will provide technical oversight, architecture, design expertise, and guidance, interdepartmental coordination, and vendor direction for Synchrony Database Engineering and automation efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) for various database platforms.

Perform Software Configuration Management (SCM) for databases.

Implement end-to-end automation of database operations and migrations.

Implement monitoring and logging solutions for different database technology stacks or container orchestration platforms.

Manage cloud operations with private or public providers (attached volume lifecycle, auto-scaling, cloud-config, security, instance lifecycle, etc.).

Implement and manage database automation in AWS from initial build to day-to-day 24x7 production support.

Eligibility Criteria:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Total Experience: Minimum 8+ years of experience performing systems automation (ideally leveraging agile methodology) on database platforms with deep expertise in at least one database technology.

Required Skills & Knowledge:

Experience working on or leading teams performing systems automation and integration using agile/lean techniques.

Competence in using scripting and programming languages to automate frequently executed DBA workflows.

3+ years of Public Cloud (AWS RDS) experience to instantiate and configure databases for mission-critical, highly available, and high-throughput applications.

3+ years of expert-level knowledge of Linux / Unix / Windows systems.

5+ years of experience as a Senior DBA or Database Automation Engineer with expertise in designing and configuring mission-critical databases.

Hands-on experience troubleshooting and managing production incidents in real time.

Clear understanding of cloud services, architectures, and deployment models.

Desired Skills & Knowledge:

Database experience across multiple engines: AWS RDS, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MySQL, Oracle, DynamoDB, or DocumentDB.

Experience with streaming services such as AWS Kinesis.

Strong scripting proficiency in Terraform, Python, and Shell/Bash.

Proven experience in migrating databases from on-premises environments to public cloud.

Ability to architect, implement, and maintain automation tooling to reduce operational complexity.

Experience establishing best practices and SOPs for development, deployment, break-fix, and systems management.

Relevant industry certifications: AWS Cloud Certification, Terraform Certification.

Core overlap requirement: 06:00 AM Eastern Time – 11:30 AM Eastern Time (anchored to US Eastern hours for cross-team collaboration). The remaining working hours offer schedule flexibility.
